WAIMATE.

CYCLING. The newly-formed Cycle Club will hold a race for members on December 19th, over a distance of approximately 12 miles. Small Bird Nuisance. Many farmers are complaining bitterly of the damage being caused to the young rape and turnip crops by small "birds. One farmer had a crop of 12 acres of turnips ruined by small birds, larks iu particular being very destructive. It is said that the birds simply hop along the drills of turnips and nip off the leaves as they go. One farmer overcame the difficulty by laying poison along the rows of turnips, and claims that this has had a most satisfactory result. ORARI.

At the Coronation Hall a dunce was held under the auspices of the Orari Domain Board in aid of a fund for hall improvement. The attendance was good, and an enjoyable evening was spent. Mr H. J. Brenton was M.C. The music was supplied by Mrs H. J. Brenton, Messrs J. Batos and W. Smith, assisted by Misses M. Smith and R. Brenton. As a result of the effort a satisfactory sum was added to tho fund. At the monthly meeting of the Orari School Committee, Mr S. Trumpor was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs J. Priddle, A. Rysdale, W. Leary, and J. Henderson. The headmaster reported that the attendance during the month had been poor, owing to the prevalence of influenza. The average attendance for the month was 110, while the roll number was 132. It was decided to present tho basketball medals won by the Orari A team in the Timaru six-a-side tournament on prize-giving day. It was decided to take advantage of the Education Board's offer of ground at Bolfield for afforestation purposes, the children to plant and tend the trees. Pinal arrangements were made for the holding of the school picnic on December lGth, and also for a danco in tho evening. It was decided to run a sports meeting in the evening of December 16th for the young people of the distrlet. On Tuesday evening tho General Committee of the Orari Tennis Club he.ld a meeting at tho tenniß courts. Mr A. Henderson presided, and Misses M. Stevens, N. Wood, Messrs D. M. Lamb, W. E. Cook, and K. Payne were also present. It was decided to commence games immediately for the men's and ladies' handicap tournaments, in order that tho tournament may be brought to a conclusion on Saturday. Tho handieapper submitted the handicaps and draws for the tournament, which wore acceded to. Miss M. Mason has returned to Orari .rf tcr spending a holiday in Greymouth.

Miss N. Carter (Christchurch) visited her parents at Orari during the weekend.

The friends of Mrs Carter (Orari) will regret to learn that she is at present an inmate of a private hospital in Geraldine.
