TEMUKA.

MANUAL TRAINING. The pupils attending the school carpentry and joinery classes, conducted at Temuka and Geraldine centres by Mr F. C. Roberts, the Education Board's woodwork instructor, have now practically finished the year's course. The exhibits made by tho pupils in the Geraldine district have been brought to Temuka, and, together with the articles made by the pupils attending the classes at Temuka, are on view in the woodwork room of the Temuka Technical School. Thero are about 200 finished articles displayed on the walis and floor of the workroom, and they do great credit to the boys, who have designed and made them, and to their painstaking instructor. The articles include trays, bread and cake boards, cutlery trays, nick-nacks, and watch hangers, clock eases, draughts board, gramophone stand, and record cabinet, a combined writing bureau and bookcase, music stool and cabinet, and a bedroom cabinet, etc., all giving proof of the skill of the maker and the value of the instruction being imparted by Mr Roberts. The following is a list of the prizewinners in the Temuka district: —L. Hunt, Temuka D.H.S., piano stool and cabinet; G. Smart, Temuka D.H.S., stool; F. King, D.H.S., bedroom cabinet; W. Whitfield, Temuka D.H.S., inlaid tea tray; G. Gale, Temuka D.H.S., fire kerb; Bruce Edwards, Temuka D.H.S., firescreen; N. Palmer, Orari School, inlaid cakc-board. Prizes were given by the following:— J. Scott, Geraldine; Priest and Holdgate, Timaru; boy and girl friend, Temuka; A. W. Buzan, Temuka; J. Duncan, Temuka; W. L. Harrison, Temuka; John Jackson and Co., Ltd., Timaru; Mrs E. Edwards, Temukn; A. W. Shirtcliffe, Timaru. The exhibits will be taken to Timaru, where, with the work •of the Timaru pupils, they will be shown at tho Timaru South School on Saturday. Bowling Club. Mallett, C. Graves, C. Nolan, C. Oliver, E. B. Taylor, IL Marshall. FAIRLIE. Very warm weather is now being experienced, Monday being a particularly hot day. This is what is now required, and shearing, which had been delayed, is now in full swing. Feed is plentiful everywhere, and crops are doing well. The warm weather has had the effect of removing a good deal of snow from the hills, and the risk of late frosts is not now so great. At «-meeting of the directors of the Mackenzie Caledonian Society there were present:—Messrs W. L. Bourn (president), W. Snushall, E. Miles, W. Close, T. Westgarth, T. Darling, J. C. Aitken, F. Geaney, E. Parfoot, A. J. Grant, A. Toomes, J. Cameron, A. Cameron, and A. Hammond. Apdlofies for absence were received from lessrs E. E. Beckett and C. J. Talbot Mr G. H. Bryant wrote stating that he would do tne catering at the sports and dance on the same conditions as last year. Mr D. D. Macdonald, Timaru, wrote stating that he would again act as judge of the piping and dancing. Mr W. J. Waldie wrote accepting tno position of handicapper. Messrs T. D. Burnett, M.P., and It. Mackenzie wrote thanking the Society for electing them as patrons of the Society. Tho president reported that the local tradespeople had agreed to observe Wednesday, the 28th inst., as the weekly half-holiday. A vote of thanks was passed to the A. and PSociety for granting the use of seats and hurdles. The sub-committee in charge of the dance were given power to engage the necessary music. It was decided that the piping event for Mr Burnett's special prize be an open event. The evening sports committee was given power to arrange programmes and to give prizes as required. Messrs W. Surridge and G. Pinkerton were appointed gatekeepers for the annual sports. The president said the Railway Department would run a special tram to Fairlie on sports day at excursion fares. _ Arrangements were made for a working bee on the grounds on the 22nd inst. At the conclusion of the meeting of the Mackenzie County Council on Monday the chairman (Mr C. J. Talbot), on behalf of members of the Council, presented Mr R. L. Banks (clerk and engineer) with a Christmas gift. Mr Banks is about to pay a holiday visit to Australia, and the chairman and members wished him a pleasant holiday. Mr Banks suitably replied and thanked all for their kindness.
