SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Dr. Kidd (Waipiata) is visiting Timaru. The Rev. J. D. McKenzie (Auckland) is visiting Timaru. Cricket. Bruce, Knott, J. R. Home. The next Bristol Cup l match will be played on the Park green on December 15th, between Park (holders) and Waimate (challengers). The Weather. There was a change in weather conditions yesterday, a howling southerly gale bringing rain and hail. Conditions were very cold, the air having the hip of winter in it. The velocity of the wind increased as the day progressed, being so strong as to shake the Post Office tower, which caused the town clock to stop. The sky remained leaden well into the night, although the wind dropped considerably. Magistrate's Court. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court took place yesterday before Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M. For exceeding the speed limit, Alfred Bertram Williams was fined 10s with costs. Charged with cutting a corner, Mary Hunter was fined 15s and costs. On similar charges William Omelvena and Daniel Doyle were each fined 20s and costs.

For failing to comply with the parking regulations, Frank Cumming was fined 10s and costs.

For leaving motor-vehicles unlighted at night, Cecil Stewart, Robert H. Miller, and Cyril Leslie Eice were each fined 10s and costs.

Francis George Sheed was fined £2 and costs for allowing an unlicensed motor-lorry to be used. George Matthew Underbill (Mr L. J. O'Connell) pleaded guilty torn charge of driving a motor-van in a manner dangerous to the public. The case was adjourned for a week pending medical evidence.

Senior-Sergeant T. Gibson said that defendant had been involved in a collision with a motor-cycle ridden by a young man named Anderson. Anderson had been seriously injured, and since the date of the accident, October 25th, had been in hospital, where he would remain for another six weeks.

The case in which Harold D. Bakley was charged with failing to notify a motor accident in which he had been involved was adjourned until next Wednesday. Henry McMillan (Mr H. Emslie) was fined £5 and costs for selling milk other than rthat obtained from a registered dairy. On a charge of selling bacon containing a preservative Bubstance, the addition of which was prohibited under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, the Caroline Dairy Company was convicted and ordered to pay costs, £3 13s 6d. Daniel Moriarty (Mr L. J. O'Connell) proceeded against William Cameion McPherson (Mr J. Emslie) for possession of a tenement. Judgment was given for plaintiff at the rate of 12s pfer week, possession to be granted on or before December 28th.

William McMillan was convictod and fined £4 and costs £3 6s on a charge of having, by his servant, sold milk which did not comply with the standard prescribed: Kobin Gray, for throwing glass, to wit, a beer bottle, on the lawn at Caroline Bay on October 27th, was convicted and fined £1 and 12s costs.

Judgment was given for plaintiff by dofault in the following civil case:— Timaru Herald Co. v. W. E. Taylor, £97 18s 9d; 6. Smith v. R. Johnston, £1 9s 3d; Official Assignee v.. J. Houlihan, £3 19s 2d; Bone and Sonß v. A. W. Hamilton, costs ss; New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co. v. J. E. Miles, £9 Is lid; F. H. Friel v. D. Caswell, £6 8s lid.

B. Hendry was. ordered to pay H. E. Barrowclough £l9, in default 20 days' imprisonment. James Hudson Brown was ordered to pay Clara E. Hichs £33 16s 6d, in default 30 days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays £3 per week, the first payment to be made on January 31st, 1928. A. E. Wallace was ordered to pay S. M. Din £8 7s forthwith, in default eight days' imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as defendant pays 7s 6d per week, the first payment to be made on December 14th.

Various interesting sidelights on the payment of farm workers in Taranaki were afforded in the course of the hearing of a claim in the Supreme Court at New Plymouth. A South Taranaki farmer stated that a good man for farm labouring could be obtained for £2 a week, and that a share-milker on a reasonably good proposition would probably clear abont £2OO a year. Another farmer of North Taranaki said he employed a share-milker, whose wife, daughter, and two sons all assisted him, at £4 a week. He considered the work on his farm was light, however. A South Taranaki sharejnilker who • has fyi some time been share-milking on tfrst-class farms, and has now taken up a farm of his own, stated that during the last year or two he had made about £450 gross, and cleared about £l5O net
