MR ELL'S WORK.

CONGRATULATORY REFERENCES

Congratulatory references to the work of Mr H. G. Ell in his untiring efforts to improve the Cashmere Hills and make them more accessible were made at Kennedy's Bush yesterday afternoon, when the rest house of the Little Sisters of Mercy was opened. His Lordship Bishop Brodie, who performed the ceremony, complimented Mr Ell. The City Beautiful was certainly enhanced by the hills, and the people of Christchurch owed a debt to him for his great work. He was sorry that Mr Ell was not present to receive his thanks. "If any man in Christchurch lias qualified for a monument," said the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer), "he is Mr Ell. who is living only for the good of the community." He was sorry to find that Mr Ell was at present faced with some difficulties on which he did not wish to comment, but speaking for himself and the citizens generally he could assure Mr Ell that the City would stand firm behind him in his wonderful work. Sir George Clifford also expressed his appreciation' of Mr Ell's labours. Mr Wm. Hayward said that Mr Ell had done wonderful work. It would be a matter for great regret if at this juncture he had to sever his connexion with the hills.
