Thousands of surfers, whom the exceptionally hot day had drawn to Clovclly Beach, witnessed a heroic struggle when thirty members of the local surf club attempted to save the lives of three youths who were being washed out. Two were saved, but Thomas Woolridge was drowned. The spot was very rocky, and the rescuers were badly knocked about and bruised as a result of their efforts, several being sent to hospital.
