Successful Burglars. London, December 2.—Surprising success has attended a gang of Aurglars operating in one of London's biggest stores, Barkers', Kensington. Barkers' were astonishingly raided by expert cat burglars, who visited each of the four floors, using hosepipes found on the premises, as ropes. Their haul consisted largely of jewellery valued at £3OOO. Mines Declared "Black." Melbourne, December 3.—Because of the alleged employment of non-union labour, the Sunbeam and Austral coal mines jn the Korumburra district, and all the mines controlled by Wallace and Winperly in the Jumbunna and Outrun districts have been declared "black." This is the finale of a long-standing 'dispute. Drastic Retrenchment. Sydney, December 3.-—The management of the Broken Hill Proprietary Steelworks at Ncwcastlo has decided that additional sections will be closed in pursuance -of the policy of retrenchment, which is the result of foreign competition, and 600 additional men will be dismissed at the week-end. Berlin, December 2.—A wartime tragedy was recalled by a fisherman's discovery in shallow water wear Eiga, of the slightly damaged hulks of two Gorman submarines, which were sunk in collision. Tokyo, December 2.—Fisticuffs and an exchange of inkpots as missiles formed the climax to a debate in the City Assembly over a motion of no confidence in the Mayor, whom political opponents are endeavouring to oust. Four members were seriously wounded. The fighting factions represent opposing National Parties, who aro now seeking to control the- political financial affairs of the capital prior to the General Election in 1928.
