UNEMPLOYMENT.
SERIOUS POSITION IN SYDNEY. (BT CABLB— PBESS assocutioh—coctbioht.) (AUSTBAMAN AND K.I. CABLI ASSOCIATION.) SYDNEY, November 21. The general commercial depression which recently led to the closing of a number of mines and other concerns, or otherwise materially shortening the number of employees, is seriously augmenting the unemployed trouble in Sydney and elsewhere. The unemployed ranks are certain be be increased with the Christmas season, and bad times are regarded as assuredly being ahead. In addition to those thrown idle by the closing of works and the reductions of hands at various concerns, there are ' about 12,000 casual unemployed registered at the State Labour Bureau. The Government is taking steps to provide relief as far as possible. It already has arranged to carry out relief work of a reproductive character, involving an expenditure 0f£23,000.
