__4 Messrs J. T. Tucker, W. W. Briscoe (Wellington), and J. H. Cashmore (Adelaide) arc at "Warner's Hotel. The Canterbury Education Board passed a resolution of sympathy yesterday with'Mr J. Caughley, late Director of Education, in the death of his wife. At the Clarendon Hotel are Messrs H. B. Massey, A. B. Shillson, John Tait (Wellington), C. A. Collier (Timaru), and C. C. Robins (Ashburton). Mr W. E. Lloyd, who was appointed by the Heathcote County Council Resident Electrician, Cashmere, was unable to take up the position, and at. last night's meeting of the Council Mr Lawrence Reed was appointed to the position. To-morrow, in the Catholic Cathedral, His Lordship Bishop Brodie will raise to the Priesthood the Rev. Gordon Daly, 8.A., student of Mosgiel Seminary, and son of Mr and Mrs W. Daly, Lancaster street, Christchurch. The ordination will be conducted at the last Mass. - Colonel-Commandant 0. Guy Powles, C.M.G., D.5.0., A.D.C. to His Majesty the King, Commandant of the Central Command of the New Zealand Military Forces, will -retire from the active list on December 15th. Colonel Powles served in the Boer War and in the Great War. Mr G. M. Hall, who met with a serious accident some weeks ago as the result of falling from a tree, in acknowledging the Heathcote County Council's letter of sympathy, wrote that he was making satisfactory progress and hoped to be able to return to ". business about the end of this month. Recent arrivals at the United (Service are Messrs H. F. Arkwright (Marton), D. McKenzie. H. J. Tubbs, R. A. Locke (Wellington), F. Hawke, R. N. Burns (Hamilton), T. L.-.H. Bate 3 (New Plymouth), G. Gurby, G. Trap (Carterton), A. C. Cooke (Gisborne), J. H. Hayhow (Wanganui), and M. McLeod (Napier). Mr 0. Lloyd, Conservative member for Dudley in tlie House of Commons, is at present in Australia, and will arrive at Auckland by the Niagara next week, coming on to Wellington the following Thursday. Mr Lloyd is a director of Lloyds Bank, a director of the Great Western Railway Company, and chairman of directors of N. Hengley and Sons, L€d., one of the biggest iron manufacturing firms in the British Empire.
