PLUNKET SHIELD TEAMS.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE PBESB. Sir,—The question of coaches playing in Plunket Shield matches is a matter that should receive very careful consideration, and I think the coaches themselves have put the facts in a very sportsmanlike way in the columns of The Press. I take it they are engaged to coach players, more especially youn<* players, and I consider they should not play in Shield matches. We have had several instances in the past when the professional player has played an important part in the result of the possession of the Plunket Shield. The real purpose of the competition for this Shield should be to improve the play of New Zealand cricketers, especially in view of further visits to England to play test matcheslf the professional cricketers now *in New Zealand are to be allowed to block youtig New Zealanders from getting their chance in big matches a large amount of the good work expected from the coaching is being lost* I hope the powers that bo in cricket affairs will see their way to confine Plunket Shield games to New Zealand players, —Yours, etc., OBSERVER.
