ACCLIMATISATION.
0 NORTH CANTERBURY SOCIETY. The meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, thoso present being: Messrs H. 11. Smith (chairman), H. Anderson, R. Ashworth, fcj. F. Barnett, W. D. Berry, F. W. Bilious, L. B. Bruntoii, C. R. Clark, W. Deaus, G. Ebert, D. Eobbs, \V. G. Ives, W. 0. Ronnie, C. J. Sloinan. G. Stoke 1, P. J. Wilson, and Professor R. Speight.
The Northern Rivers Committee reported that small bags of fish in fair condition were being obtained from the Ashley river. The fish in the Cam river were in excellent conditio): and good bags had been obtained from' the Waimakariri. Owing to dredging operations in the main drain, it had spoilt that stretch for fishing this season. A new ranger was to be appointed to tho northern districts.
The report was adopted. The Lakes Committee reported that in connexion with the season for Canadian geese, it had been resolved to recommend that the society apply for a full season nest year, with the bag limit per day to lie the same as at 'present. The secretary had reported that the stocking of the Lake Coleridge lakes was carried out as follows: — Rainbow: Snowdon, 2000; Lake Coleridge, 15,000; Monks, 5000. Brown: Lake Coleridge, 25,000: Evelyn, 5000; Monks, 5000. The committee i had inspected Lake Self and was of the opinion that it should carry fish. The committee would investigate the position and would report later. It recommended that Lakes Georgia and Lyndon aud Mere Mere be heavily fished this year, these lakes having been well stocked recently.
The report was adopted. Major Northcote and Messrs D. Bradbury, Milliken, Stokcl, H. Nimnio, and Ranger Digby were thanked for their assistance in liberating the fry. It was decided to write to the Drainage Board with reference to the. crumping of grass in the Avon, and asking them to take action. It was stated that this action was Mocking the river and was also spoiling the fishing. Mr D. Hobbs moved and Mr Stoke) seconded a motion requesting a report at the next meeting with reference to the teaching of native bird life in the schools, prizes to be given for essays on the subject. A sub-committee was fret up to report on the matter.
