ISLAND TRADE.
A BUSINESS DELEGATION. FIRST TRIP OF GOVERNMENT STEAMER. The Council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce decided last night to co-operate with the Department of Industries and Commerce in a delegation of businessmen to the Islands with the object" of going into trade potentialities. The Department wrote regarding the proposed business delegation to Samoa and Niue by the first trip of the Gov- j I eminent steamer, Maui Pomare, at the end of March next that the trip would occupy about 23 days, and would cost £3O per head. The Department was willing to organise a party consisting of members of Chambers of Commerce, say, two from each of the four centres, two members from each of the Manufacturers' Associations, the balance to be made up from representatives of the fruit trade. Considerable importance was attached to such a delegation, and the valuable information it might obtain regarding the import and export trade. It was felt that much of the trade done bv the Commonwealth could be captured by New Zealand firms if delegates were sent who could give reliable information as to New Zealand ports, actual c.i.f. quotations, and better still, submit samples. Practically the whole of the export trade with Niue was done from New Zealand. The Department of External Affairs had undertaken the organising work at Niue and Samoa with a view to placing every facility at the disposal of the delegates. It was decided to reply expressing the Chamber's willingness to co-oper-ate in the proposed trip.
