THIRD PARTY POLICIES
MOTORISTS AND INSURANCE. A letter was received from the South Island Motor Union, at last night's meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce, asking the chamber to co-operate wihh the union in urging on the Government the necessity for bringing down legislation making it compulsory that a thirdparty policy of insurance be taken out for all motor vehicles before a license to use was issued, such policy to be issued by an approved company or institution. It was well known that there had been many serious accidents involving loss of life, personal injury, and damage to property, where it had been found that the person causing the damage had no means and that the injured parties bad no chance of recovering damages- It was generally found, in fact, that the man who was ab'e to pay damages usually took the precaution to insure, but the man who had nothing to lose generally did not trouble to insure, knowing that no action would be taken against him, as it would be a useless waste of money. Union in the matter.
