BOROUGH COUNCILS.
SUMNER. A meeting of the Samner Borough Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson), Councillors B. J. Ager, W. Henley, T. Newburgh, V. E. Hamilton, C. I. Denham, C. J. Wilson, and F. O. Cooper. The Works Committee reported that the ontfall creek from Colenso street to the beach and the whole of the culverts and channels in Redcliffs had been cleaned. The work at the Taylor's' Mistake protection -wall was proceeding satisfactorily. The report was adopted. The Fire Brigade Superintendent reported that in his opinion the amount of hose on Scarborough and Clifton would not be sufficient should any serious fires break out in these localities. In accordance with the Superintendent's request it was decided to purchase the necessary hose, the quantity and price to be left in the hands of the Works Committee. The Fire Brigade's application for a boot allowance fo £1 per man, amounting to £IS, was granted. No objection was raised to the rente submitted by the City Motor Inspector, over which it was proposed to coDduct.aJtour by the Tramway Board bus. Mr A. A. Cheshire was appointed the borough delegate to a meeting of the representatives of the Local Electric Supply Authorities. A letter from Mr H. Hobday, in connexion with the Taylor's Mistake water supply scheme was received. The Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Club wrote asking the Council to appoint a representative to wait on the City Council with members of other bodies concerned, asking for an increase in their annual grant. It was decided to ask Mr F. J. Glackin to act in this position. . Permission was granted the Christchurch Municipal Band to play a programme 'of music on the rotunda on November 20th. The Plunket Society's request for permission to use the vestibule of the Town Hall on Saturday, November 26th, was granted. Tho urgent need for suitable facilities for the various sports bodies in Sumner was stressed by a deputation to the Council from the United Sports Association. Mr G. 1. Allen said that the deputation had come to submit a proposition which would enable the Council to carry out the work at the Association's request. He said that the sports bodies were under a tremendous disadvantage when using St. Leonard's square, the Cricket Club finding great difficulty m carrying on without dressing facilities, while the Football Club had been helped by the ■residents nearby. After the deputation had withdrawn, considerable discussion followed, and it was decided that the question be left in the hands of Councillors W. Henley and B. J. Ager, w: ,r i power to act.
