MEETING OF LOCAL COMMITTEE
A meeting oE the local committee of the New Zealand Branch of the British Bed Cross Society and the Order of St. John was held at Christchurch recently. There were present—Mr J. A. Flesher (chairman), Lady Wigram, Mrs H. H. Smith, Miss Guthrie, and Mr W. E. D. Bishop. The financial statements showed that during the month of October 216 ex-Service patients had received attention at the Upper Sanatorium, Cashmere Hills, at Queen Mary Hospital, Hanmcr, at the Rannerdale Home, at the Coronation Hospital, at the Mental Hospital, at the Christchurch Hospital, and ns out-patients, and that the expenditure on clothing, tobacco, hospital requisites, extra food, motor hire, amusements, and including grants to the various matrons for miscellaneous purchases, had totalled' £IBB Is Id. In addition to the foregoing, expenditure on Red Cross Club work, which provided moving pictures, furnishings, cards, newspapers, books, magazines, and other amusements, had totalled £75 17s 5d for the same period. The chairman reported that a deputation from the committee had waited upon the Public Health Committee of the Hospital Board in connoxion with an application to the Ho»pital Board to pay a share of the cost of recreational work at the Upper Sanatorium, but the Board's decision had not yet been received. Statements were presented showing amounts due by Southland and Nelson Centres in respect of ex-Service men froni these districts who had participated m the expenditure on hospital comforts and recreations at Cashmere Hills and at Hanmer Springs.
Sister Christian's report of -work done in | the Methven district during the month was received. It stated that tho classes had all been well attended with the exception of the class at Lauriston. which had suffered through an epidemic of measles in the district. The written examinations would be held during the first week in December, and the practical examinations when arranged by Matron Harrington. The first aid course being given by Dr. McKee Was now completed. Health lectures would be started at the Convent this month, and a Junior Red Cross Circle would also be formed. Rehearsals for the health play, to be given at the High School break-up would be commenced this month. It was resolved that letters of thanks be sent to people who had assisted with the classes in the various districts, also to Matron Harrington, who had undertaken to examine the students.
