EDUCATION SERVICE.
UNREST AND DISCONTENT. "The various bodies interested in education keep too much to themselves," said the president, Mr A. C. Maxwell, at last night's annual dinner of the North. Canterbury Headmasters' Association.
"A gathering of this kind," he said, "will do a lot of good. In the interests of education we must get together ofteher. '...'. Recently a committee was set up to discuss the unemployment ■of. teachers, and it is a pity that there is not a similar committee meeting. often in the interests of all concerned. The present gathering is a step in that direction. Never in the history of .education has combined effort been more necessary than it is at present. There is a feeling of unrest and discontent with, education to-day, and it is felt that better results, in accordance with modern ideas, should be attained." Teachers should take a more active part in the. civic life of the community and they would never . keep abreast of the times until they did, said the speaker. .
Educational reform was hampered by diversity of opinion and good results would come from an annual conference by representatives of the Education Board, inspectors, School Committees, teachers, representatives of industrial concerns, and practical business men. Such a conference would be the means of arriving at agreement on educational policy.
