A TIMBER YARD.

APPLICATION FOR SITE REFUSED Reconsideration was given by the City Council last evening to Clause 2 of the Town Planning, Housing, and Health Committee's 1 report, of October 25th, as follows: Application for permission to establish a timber-yard and construct a machine shop in Moorhouse avenue and Hagley avenue. —The Committee has inspected the site of the proposed timberyard, and, after' giving the matter due consideration, recommends that the application be refused, as it is of opinion that the area referred to must be classed as a residential one. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) said the Canterbury Master Builders' Association had written stating that it unanimously decided to support the application, as in its opinion the district was undoubtedly an industrial one.. A letter was received from Misses F. and E. M. Chisnall advising that they had not offered at any time tg the adjoining owners their property, which is in the centre of the block of land Surrounded by Moorhouse and Hagley avenues and Selwyn street, and for which the purchaser had applied to the Council for permission to establish a timberyard and sawmill. Cr. G. Manning moved that the report be adopted. This was opposed by Cr. Beaven, who moved as an amendment that unless the residents in the vicinity purchased the land within three months, the site be granted for a timber-yard. The Mayor refused to accept this, stating that the proposal would be illegal.

Cr J. W. Beanland said he was in favour of the site being regarded as a residential area, but he was against any dog in the manger attitude. C-r. E. M. Macfarlane said he thought ,the area was something between a residential and an industrial area. He would vote against the report, as he thought it was only kowtowing to certain people in the neighbourhood. The report was adopted.
