COUNTY COUNCILS.
OXFORD. At the monthly meeting of the Oxford County Council there were present: Mr R. F. Henderson (chairman) and Crs. H. F. Luers, A. Meyer, E. Meyer, A. T. Barry, E. Skurr, and T. Powell. The monthly report, which was adopted, slated that the Woodstock road and E. Wells' road had been patched; flood-gates had been pill, in T. Doody's and E. Wells' fltimes, and two sheep bridges had been erected over the main race at C. Evans'. It was decided to pay 6d per dozen for blackbirds' and thrushes', eggs, and 3d per dozen , for sparrow eggs, A deputation on behalf ot the A. and P. Association waited on the Council in connexion with the sale of the Association's land to the Council. After a general discussion it was decided, if the Association would sell its section to the Council, in the event of thn Council requiring the land, the Council would grant the Association the free use ot a suitable room, to be known as the A. and P. Association room.
It was decided to cut off die Kyre waterraces for general cleaning on November 21st, "22nd, 23rd, 28th, 29th, and 30th, and the Cooper's creek water-races on November 24th, 25th, and 26th, and December Ist, 2nd, and 3rd. Mr P. Gorton waited on the Council to ask that, the fire clause be struck out of. his conditions of lease of Mt. Oxford reserve. It was decided to adhere to" the fire clause. The rain reports for the month were:— At Messrs Ci'oy Bros.', 2.93, and at H. A. Pritchavd's 4.13. A letter was received from the secretary of the 1.0.0. F. Excursion Committee asking the Council to proclaim a public holiday on Wednesday, November 23rd. the date of its excursion. The clerk was instructed to ask the business places'to close on that day. Mr Climie, of the Canterbury Progress T.eague, visited the Council, and gave, an account of the League's activities during the. past year. A very large deputation of ratepayers of the Wnimakariri River Trust district waited on fhe Council, .and asked the Council to call a public meeting, and invite the members of the River Trust to bo present. Various speakers stressed the point that they were of the opinion that the Trust work would not stand a big flood: the rates had been doubled this year, and the ratepayers had no guarantee that the rates would not be higher after a big flood. The Council decided to call a public meeting as requested. Or. Skurr reported that, as requested, Cr. Powell, himself, and the clerk had inspected the falls in th« drain in F. Baxter's property. and they recommended that they he repaired with concrete. Steffans' road was inspected, and they recommended that about ten chains be graded, and the ruts filled in for about ten chains. They also selected pits on the properties of the estate of ,T. O'Hallorah and A. Graham. It was decided'to carry out. the recommendations, and the clerk >-as' instructed to write to the trustees of the estate, ,T. O'Halloran. and to Mr A. 0. Graham with reference to buying the land for the gravel' pits. Cr. E. W. Meyer reported that Crs. Barry, A. Meyer, himself, and the clerk had inspected the water-race in M. Pavilka's property; the race, which has not been running for some years, is practically filled up and overgrown with gorse. The clerk was instructed to look up the agreement in connexion with the race, and report to Crs. Luers and Barry, who were given power to act in the matter. • . . The clerk was instructed to issue several gorse notices to ratepayers who have neglected to clean gorse off the roadside. Mrs F. J. Cleeve wrote, asking the Council r permission to transfer Reserves 2138 to her son, Mr A. E. Cloeve. The transfer of the lease was grantsd. . A letter was received from the. Prime Minister asking the Council to observe Armistice Day on the same, lines as in previous years. It was decided to carry out the request.
