GERALDINE.
PERSONAL. Mr F. H. Fish, manager of the Geraldine branch of the Bank of New Soul a Wales, and Mrs Fish, left on Wednesday afternoon for a holiday, which they intend spending in Christchurch.
Mr 11. G. Larson, of the Christchurch office of the Bank of New Zealand, is acting as toller at the Geraldino branch of the Bank during the abseneeof the manager on holiday. Mr Q. Christopher is acting-manager for the time being. October Rainfall.
Mr M. G. Williams Geraldino Downs, reports that the rainfall for October at his observatory was 30S points. Rain fell on right days, tho heaviest fall being registered on the 16th, when 82 points showed in tho gauge. The highest temperature was 80 degrees on the 11th, and the lowest .31 degrees on the night of the 23rd.
Farmers' Union. The monthly meeting of tho Geraldinc branch of the New' Zealand Farmers' Union was held in the secretary's office, when tho following members of the committee were present: Mr J. T. Paterson (president) in the chair, Messrs A. J. McLean, D. E. Lewis, E. Volekman, W. Tait, H. Hill, T. P. Wooding, H. M. Verrall, and the secretary (Mr J. Kennedy). Tho president put before the committee the Government's proposals regarding the Arbitration Act. After discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr A. J. McLean, seconded by Mr Volckman, that the branch support the Government proposals to alter the Arbitration Act.
Mr J. E. Cook, Department of Agriculture, delivered an interesting address on "Wool."
Badminton Club. Thursday afternoon saw the opening of a new sport at Geraldine, a Badminton Club, under the name of the Wynwood Park Club, which will occupy grounds situated on Miss E. A. Bell's property, Raukapuka. Mr T. H. Bannchr performed the opening ceremony.
Fire at Gapes Valley. A fire occurred at Valley at about 3 o'clock on mbrning, with the result that a five-roomed wooden house, the residence of Mr H. H. Cain, was burned to tho ground. Mr Cain was awakened early in tho morning by hearing something fall in the room adjoining his bedroom, and on investigation, found the room in flames, which quickly enveloped the whole house. Mr Cain and his family were only able to save their personal effects, all tho furniture, including a valuable piano, being consumed. The house was insured'in tho Yorkshire' Company for £3OO, the same company holding the risk on tho furniture to tho extent of £2OO, while tho piano was insured for £l2O.
Garden Party. A very successful and enjoyable garden party was held at "Eaukapuka;" Geraldine, the residence 6f Mr and Mm H. D. Neutze, who had invited a large number of guests for the occasion. "Ehe afternoon turned out ideal from the weather and the_ grounds looked at their best. During the afternoon several games and competitions were held. A golf putting competition was won by Mr R. Neutze and Miss Stringer; quoits by Miss Prattley; "Aunt Sally" by Mr B. Pizzey; and hoop croquet by Mrs Neutze. The prizes were given by Mesdames Neutze,' Cliff, and the Rev. H. Ford. Stalls were held by the Ladies' Guild:—Work, Mesdames" Grayburn and Henry; cakes and: sweets, Mesdames Wallach, McKeown, Miss Comber, and Miss Pratt; fruit salad, Mesdames W. G. Sherratt, and A. Neutze. Afternoon tea was presided over by Mesdames N. Sherratt, Logan, Davis, Pizzey, Smith, and Fyfc- Competition judges were Mrs Cliff, .Mr R. Neutze, Mr • R Neutze, and Mr "Wfillach.
