THIEVES MISS £2700.

GELIGNITE USED ON SAFE. (PBESS ASSOCiATIOH TBLZORAM.) WHAKATANE, November 4. A deliberate attempt to blow open the safe at the railway station at Taneatua occurred some time during last night. In the safe was ..a sum of £2700 for the railwaymen's wages, but the would-be thieves were unsuccessful in obtaining the loot. They had used too much gelignite, which tended to keep the safe locked rather than to force it open. They had effected an entrance to the station building by. means of a window.

Although it was knocked about a good deal the safe intact when the discovery was made this morning.
