PETROL TAX.
RUSH FOR CASE SPIRIT. Since notification was given of the intention of, the Government to impose a tax of, 4d per gallon on petrol there has been a great demand for case spirit, __motorists being anxious to avoid'payment of the impost as long as possible. The inauguration of the bowser system of supplying petrol proved a set-back to the sale of case spirit, but hundreds of gallons packed in this manner havo been sold since the beginning of the week, orders of 40, 60, 80, and even 100 case lots being given. The temporary boom m this class of trade has npt been participated in, however, bowser stations owing to the unsuitableness of bulk spirit for storage purposes. The Garage Proprietors' Association having decided that the price-cutting "war" between •'themselves and the proprietors of the bowser stations should cease, the price of petrol, which has recently been Is 6d per gallon", reverted yesterday to its former figure of Is 9d. Thus, by.purchasing petrol on Wednesday, as so many motorists did, they were able to save 3d per gallon, in addition to the tax of 4d, making a total saving of 7d. As a case contains two tins of petrol, each of four gallons, those who made such purchases have benefited to the extent of 4s 8d a case.
