# MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention o£ Cruelty to Animals met last night. Present: Messrs A. W. MacGillivray, G. E. Biltcliff, J. 0. Jameson, T. Gee, R. Wilson, Mrs G. E. Biltcliff, arid Miss Williamson. An apology for absence was received from Mr A. Morten. Mr MacGillivray was reelected chairman, and Mr Arthur Morten was reelected vicechairman. The executive, consisting of the chairman, vice-chairman, and Messrs R. Wilson and J. 0. Jameson, was re-elected. The chairman extended a welcome to Miss Williamson and Mr Gee, new members of the committee. Arising out of the minutes of the executive meeting, held on the loth o£ last month, the secretary (Mv G. T. Bullock) explained that the Nelson S.P.C.A. had written asking if the Canterbury Society would join with other societies in ' being represented at the Supreme Court proceedings to determine whether "the S.P.C.A. of New Zealand," in relation to a bequest made by the late Miss M. A. Buckley, fermerly of Wellington, referred to the Wellington S.P.C.A., or to all the societies in the Dominion. The executive decided to bear its proportion of the legal costs. The bequest amounted to £3OO, plus one quarter of the residue of the estate The residue is estimated to produce nearly £5000; it. is subject to a life interest. Miss Jessie Mackay wrote with reference to the importation of monkeys for the purposes of vivisection, and asked if the Canterbury Society should not join with the Puncdin Society in an endeavour to get to the bottom of the matter. It was decided to sr-mj ;i coi.v of Misf Mackay's letter to the Dunedin Society, and ask whether it is investigutir.-: the matter. The report of the inspector (Mr D. J White) contained reference to a case at Kowai Bush in -which some lads were alleged to have painted-a horFe like a leopard and tied a dead magpie to its tail and let it loose. The rolice were taking action against the youths for mischief. Replying to a question, Mr White said that the animal had suffered from selfinflicted kicks. Arrangements relating to the SocietVs display at the Royal Show were left in the hands of the executive. Regarding tho removal of dead animals from the streets, it was decided to obtain information as to the procedure in other centres.
