STATEMENT REFUTED. (rsess issocmioit tilioram.) AVELLINGTON, October 20. Mr W. Machin, the retiring president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, in addressing the annual'conference at Christchurch yesterday, is reported as having stated that the Public Trust Office pays no income tax. The statement attributed to Mr Machin is quite incorrect, the Publio Trust Office paying income tax at the highest rates under the Act. The Public Trustee has telegraphed Mr Machin to this effect, asking him to correct the mistake.

Mr Machin has sent a telegram to the Public Trustee, Wellington, as follows : "Very sorvy indeed I quoted ittcorrect information concerning 5 - our income tax. Does your Department pnv rates and graduated land tax?" "I shall make a statement concerning this matter,.at the conference session on Monday," said Mr Machin to a representative of The Press.
