VISIT TO "ILAM."
HORTICULTURISTS DELIGHTED. i By the courtesy of Mr and Mrs E.. F. Stead, of "Ham," Ham road, Riccarton, members of the Canterbury Horticultural Society visited the garden and grounds around "Ham" on Saturday afternoon and were delighted with what they saw. There were between 200 and 300 present. As the visitors arrived they dispersed over the extensive and admirably kept grounds, and evejywhere found something to interest them, or something which they could admire. .. " _, The severe hailstorm experienced early last week left its mark on "Ham," as it did on many other gardens. This was noticed particularly in the bed of anemones on the front lawn, but though it evidently had felt the full force of the hail there remained many beautiful blooms. The rhododendrons and azaleas, for which "Ham" is justly noted, suffered much less and made a showing almost as brave and beautiful as on the occasion of the visit by members of the society about the same time twelve months ago. The visitors were much impressed by the numerous yearling rhododendrons they saw. The picturesque surroundings—the stream with its many windings, its quaint brfdpres. and its old time water wheel, and the many beautiful trees—were all much admired.
