GAOL IN FUTURE.
MAGISTRATE WARNS MOTORISTS ; "In future the Court will have to send these men to gaol," was the warning given by the Magistrate in the Lower Court on Saturday, When a salesman was charged with being v toxicated while in charge of a motorcar, i'hefo have been several iieh cases within the past few months, ami the Magistrate considered that the number was out of all reason. Edmund James L'urton Wall, salesman, aged 50 years, wai charged that on October 28th at Christchurch, h-t was in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in ■ Barbadoes S MrE. D. Mosley, S.M., was on the bench, and Mr A. J. Malley appeared for defendant, who pleaded guilty Senior-Sergeant Fitzpatrick said defendant had been driving a motor-car at the intersection of Barbadoes and Hereford Streets, nnd had collided ivtth a motor-cyclist. When tho police arrived they considered that defendant. was not in a fit state to drive a car. I Mr Maliey said Wakefield had been I doing business for his firm, and had I had several drinks with clients, taking more liquor than was good for him He had been driving home for lunch when the accident occurred. It was a regrettable incident, and defehdant felt it very deeply. He was a married man with ten children. Counsel nsked that defendant's license not ue cancelled, as it would mean taking awav his livelihood. . The Magistrate said the public.were not to be "endangered by such drivers. Day after day cases of the kind were being heard by the Court. He had previously issued warnings, and he .ow gavo a further one. which he hoped the papers would take up. They could not have intoxicated men in charge of motor-cars. Their judgment was faulty and they took greater risks than they otherwise would In the future the Cotlrt Would ronsider sending such nen to eaol.
