OVERSTAYED THEIR LEAVE. [THE PfcESS Special. Service.] AUCKLAND, October 29, Two more Chinese appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning be- I foic Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., on charges of remaining in the Dominion longer than tho period allowed by their temporary permits. Both had overstayed their permits by 14 months. Mr Goodall, who appeared for accused, Paid Fong New Sing, aged 3J, had come from Hastings and given himself up. He would be leaving by the steamer next week. Counsel asked that the fact that accused had given himself up would be taken into consideration, A fiuQf of £lO or. in default, one month's imprisonment, was imposed. Mr Goodall, in asking for leniency for O. Tohg, said that ho was afraid that there was a phase of Chinese mentality that we were unable to estimate. Mr Hunt: These men have done tho cotintrv pretty well, and iiave dodged paving the poll tax of £IOO. Mr Pcnn. Collector of Customs, said that licensed had overstayed his permit by 14 months. Accused was fined £lo.
