l CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION | COMPETITION. i i | RICCARTOX AND OLD BOYS DEFEATED. Cr:,.-l;e:ers were favoured wi:h beau:'.inl weather again on Saturday when the seoond round of was concluded. At ITag-ej Park the attendance was probably double that of the previous best for grade matches. and there was barely standing room aioag the northern boundary. The attraction was J. Newman, the Hampshire professional, who arrived during the week and was making his lirst appearance for West Christchurch. The two teams that are most fancied :ur the championship—Kicearton and High Schoo. Old Boys—were both beaten, and evenness nf the teams will probably result " ; big attendances this season. Uiccarlon were in an almost hopeless, postHon when play was resumed on Saturday, for St. Albans had a first innings lead of 39 with three wickets in hand. They eventually got a lead of 92. Kicearton, in their second innings, set out to force the pace, and Gorrie, who went in first with Roberts, hit up 48 iu an incredibly short time. Roberts and Gibbs later set up a merry partnership of 89, and the innings was closed at 4.50. St. j Albans were left with just under an hour to bat, and as the first four wickets fell quickly—for 8 runs —it looked as though Kicearton might pull the game out of the tire. Falloon and North, however, came to the recue, and St. Albans were left winners on the first innings. i RICCARTOX. ' i First innings . . . . . . US | Second Innings. • 0. T. linwood v. West Christchurch. On the provious Saturday West Christchurch had set Linwood the substantial total of 27:J, to which Linwood had replied with o2 for no wickets. When the game was resumed on Saturday the wholg attention of tho hig crowd was focused on Newman. He sent down four overs of more or loss erratic length, and wan then takon oft. Later on he went on at the other end, and at onco finding his length, he soon demonstrated that he is a high-class bowler. Newman is a tall, spare mau with a lithe frame. "With an easy run to the wickets and a high delivery, the flip of his lingers as be releases tlio ball shows that ho is "doing something" with it. He is medium to fast medium, and varies his pace by sending down n fast ball occasionally. He swings at times, and this, with his off break, makes him a dangerous bowler.
Linwood had oniy added seven to their previous day's score when Findlav bowled Boon. Then Cotidliffe and Rend set, up a great partnership which added 135. On Newman going on again, however, ho bowled Head with the total 194, and Condliffe ono run later. Then the wickets fell quicklv, and eight were down for 2-12, with the odds strongly in favour of West. Yates, however, . csdio to the rescue, and with Menere the > total was brought, level with West's —273. Cocks then skittled Menere, and Spons:, the last man, went in. Ho played his first ball to deep cover, and the winning singlo could easily have been got. A great shout, went up as Cocks clean-bowled him next ball, leaving tbc game a tic on the first innings.
