SOVIET SEAMEN.
* INADEQUATE WAGES PAID. (by cable— press association'— uofyright.) (Stones "Sun" Service.) (Received October 25th, 9.10 p.m.) ' LONDON, October 24. The Geneva correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says the International Labour Office publishes striking details of the distress among Russian seamen. Twenty-five thousand seamen unionists are unemployed out of 156,000 members. The withdrawals exceed affiliations by 50 per cent. Wages are barely 70 per cent, of the pre-war level, averaging 64s a month. A proposal requesting the Central Committee to demand increased wages was rejected as an attempt to curry favour with the masses. The delegates pointed out that the eight-hour day did not exist in Russian ships owing to the absence of proper accommodation, also because most of the seamen prefer long hours to augment • their totajly inadequate wages.
