CITY TRAFFIC INSPECTORS. AUTHORITY TO ARREST. The spectacle may ™t be witnessed of Mr H. Macintosh, Chief Traffic Inspector for the City, conducting an offending motorist to the Hereford street police station. This power the Citj Council has decided to give to Mr Macintosh, and his first assistant. The By-laws Committee reported last C *' e 'T?e g c^mitiec J s attention has been drawn to the fact that recent y the Assistant Chief Traffic Inspector had occasion to pull up a driver of a motor vehicle who was intoxicated. Owing to the fact that the inspector had no power to make an arrest, it was necessarv to call a constable. In this instance bv following the car they were successful in having an arrestmade. "The prosecution was instituted by the police under statutory authority, and the fine became the property ot the Police Department. The committee recommends that the Chief Jrattio Inspector and the Assistant Cliiet Traffic Inspector be sworn in as special constables under the provisions of Section 70 of the Municipal Corporations Act, in order that they may have power to arrest in such cases. "At the present time, the inspectors havo no power to hold up a driver of a motor vehicle who may be intoxicated and in an unsuitable state to drive a vehicle.'' The clause was adopted.
