INCREASES REFUSED.

CITY COUNCIL WAGES. increases in wages were refused to two bodies of City Council workmen last evening, on the recommendation of the Abattoir and Works Committees. The Abattoir Committee reported as follows: — "The/ Secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Works and Belated Trades Union has written, claiming an increase in wages' for the labourers employed at the City Abattoir, especially the men engaged in scalding tripe. The Union is of opinion that the conditions surrounding the work done by these men warrant some little consideration in this direction. "The Committee has made enquiries regarding the conditions under which the men in question work, and it has been ascertained that they are receiving £4 13s per week, plus overtime. The abattoir manager reports that their work is ,not dirty, and the Committee has therefore -replied that it cannot recommend the granting of an increase, but that, if the union so desires, it will be prepared to receive a deputation with regard to the matter." The Workß and Water Supply Committee reported that a letter had been received from the secretary of the Canterbury Traction and Stationary EngineDrivers' and Firemen's and. Greasers' Industrial Union of Workers, stating that as the labourers employed at the destructor .received Is per day dirt money, the firemen who at present receive 6d per day extra, should also be paid Is, The Committee had given the matter due consideration, but had informed the Union that as no provision had been made on the current year's Estimates for the suggested increase, it regretted that it could .not approve of the granting of the request. Both clauses were adopted.
