HOARDINGS.

TOTAL PROHIBITION PROPOSED. MAYOR WITHDRAWS MOTIONS. The evergreen subject of hoardings, concerning which, innumerable motions have been passed by the present and the previous City Council, occupied attention again at last night's meeting of the Council, but a long debate was obviated by the action of the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) in withdrawing, with the Council's permission, the following motions of which he had given notice: "(a) That the resolution of the Council adopted on February Ist, 1926, authorising the erection of hoardings in business areas be rescinded. "(b) That this Council resolves not to issue licenses for fresh hoardings, firstly because hoardings are objectionable in themselves, and secondly because it is reported that the Government intends to give all license-holders a vested "interest for five years."

Cr. A. W. Beaven moved the following motion, of which notice had also been given: "That the Town Planning Committee be instructed to bring down a large scale map of Christchurch showing in colour the areas they consider to be' business areas, in order that property-owners may know where they are."

He saidl the matter should be cleared up, so that the public would know where they stood. At the present time there was great scope for land speculation. He was most interested in the sites which might be used for industrial purposes. Too much power was being placed in the hands of a few men. A new set of conditions were .being brought in. Councillors were a body of very honourable men, but an opportunity was given for graft which should not exist He hoped he was not treading on anybody's toes Cr E. H. Andrews seconded the motion. "It's a bit of a job and will take some time to c?o," he said. Cr. G. R. Hunter said ho would support the motion, and the Mayor said there was nothing controversial about it. Cr. G. Manning said the Town Planning Committee would bo glad to have Cr. Beaven's co-operation. The motion was referred to the Town Planning Committee by consent.
