PERSONAL. (mCW, TO TBX PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, July 26. Mr H. H. Brown, of the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, left to-day on transfer to Gore. Mr and Mrs J. Haile (Hokitika) left to-day for Christchurch. Among the outward passengers by tn-dav's express were Mrs G. ij*rry, MVsK, Q. Srry, H. Murray, T. B. Baty, and F. K. Chipman. . Mr E. B. Mabin, who has been visitine Nelson and Wellington, returned today Mr and Mrs Mabm and family will leave for Nelson, where they will permanently reside early in September. Mr P. Gembitsky, of the Railway Traffic Office, Greymouth, is confined to his home suffering from a poisoned foot. Mr Patrick O'Brien, a West Coast pioneer, died at tho Old People's Home, Greymouth, yesterday. Mr O'Brien who was unmarried, was a native of Ireland, and 88 years of age. The marriage was solemnised at fot. Patrick's Church this morning by the Bev. Father Holohan of Mr Leslie Harvey' of the Railway Department, Greymouth, and formerly of Levin, and Miss Julia Lynch, third daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Lynch, Guinness street, Greymouth. The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Agnes Lynch, and Mr Robert Scott was best man. At St. John's Presbyterian Church yesterday the marriage was solemnised of Miss Margaret Meiklo Black, of Dobson, and Mr Henry Baden Watkins, of Stockton. The Rev. T. N. Cuttle officiated. Inangahua Miners. The following are the nominations for the various offices for the Inangahua Miners' Union for the ensuing year:— For president, Mr T. E. Williams (unopposed); vice-president, Mr J. W. Patterson (unopposed); treasurer, Mr W. Harvey (unopposed); trustees, Messrs M. Sara, E. Elliston; secretary and workmen's inspector, Messrs D. McKane, Percv Jones, F. Rollerson; executive, Messrs Gordon Ward, F. Baird, M. Kennedv, W. Hynes, R. Davis, E. Rose, E. Taylor, W. McCaffrey, Jas. Banks, Geo. Gofton, M. Sara, F. Sara, R. McLean, W. Hillary, and B, Hunt. Seven members are required for the executive, and the ballot will take place on August 10th. Root Growing. The following are the results of the boys and girls' root-growing competition for the 1926-27 season, held under the auspices of the West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral and Industrial Association, tho judges being Messrs W. H. Johnston and C. S. Dalgleish:—Carrots: Robert Ford (Harihari) 1, Jack McMillan (Harihari) 2, Tom Ford (Harihari) 3. Swedes: Jack Blackmore (Nelson Creek 1, Wm. Hamilton (Mikonui) 2, Edgar Buss (Camerons) 3. The Grey Harbour Board Shield, which is awarded for turnip-growing, will be held for the year by Jack Blackmore (Nelson Creek). An Interesting Route.

Good progress is being made by. the two gangs of workmen employed by the Public Works on the formation of the section of three miles of road between Springs Junction and Station Creek. This work, when complete, will give through road communication between Reefton and Murchison via the Maruia Hot Springs route, and will open up a large s tract of valuable agricultural country. Mr W. F. Brett, Inangahua County Engineer, who has jttfit returned from one of his periodical visits to the district, reports that when completed the road should soon become popular with motorists. Mr Brett stated that the river should cause no trouble in ordinary weather. He found game plentiful in the Maruia district. While returning to Beefton two. stags were seen on the road at very close quarters; in fact, they practically refused to move. The animals were in splendid condition. Bugby League. The weekly meeting of the West Coast Eugby League was held this

evening when Mr W. 8. Clarke presided.

Correspondence was received from the Canterbury League accepting August 13t!i as the opening date of their Coast tour, and asking for 60 per cent, of the gross gate, in lieu of 60 per cent, of the net gate. It was decided to fall in with the alteration.

The New Zealand Council > wrote stating that it had been decided to put into operation the new play-the-ball rules, and asking the Centre to instruct its referees and players in the matter. It was resolved to have copies printed and handed to each club and referee.

Three players ordered off in the third grade fixture between Blackball and

Marist at Blackball last Sunday were cautioned. • A request from'- the Woolston Club, through Mr J. Dore, for a couple of games on the Coast for its senior and fourth grade team was discussed, and it was decided to arrange for the games during the time the Coast team is away on tour, the two country clubs to combine on the Saturday and the town club on the Sunday to play them. Rugby Union. At the weekly meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union this evening, Mr A. Adams presided. It was resolved to play the Newman Shield match, Grey v. Hokitika, at 1.30 p.m. on Victoria Park on AUgust 6th, the date on which the Maori All Blacks play at Greymouth.
