WELWYN GARDEN CITY.
Mr I. Irwin Crookes, M.1.E.E., a member of the Auckland City Council, who returned recently from a trip to Endand, visited amongst other places Welwyn Garden City, situated 25 miles out of London The foundations of this bi<r settlement were planned and law about five years ago, Mr Crookes said, and tho work was steadilv progressing under tho direction of a skilled townplanner. People interested in model towns had invested large sums of money in the scheme, and it was anticipated that the stock would eventually become gilt-edged security. All the surroundings and the general outlay of this big garden city were beautiful. Trees, woodlands, extensive lawns, and lovely natural features <>f the landscape were all being used to heighten the effect. Though no dividends had been paid by the company as yet, there could be little doubt that the undertaking would be a big sue cess, said Mr Crookes. People of the professional and semi-professional type made up the population of the city, together with working folk of the superior class. Built close to a railway line, with its- own artistically finished railway station, the settlement was served with all modern conveniences, and had an excellent water supply. The ■streets and reserves were made under the supervision of a civil engineer, who o-ordinated with the town-planning director. All the best town-planning principles Vere followed and the homes of the residents 'were'b'uilt on targe sections surrounded by lawns and gardens.
