TIMARU.

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs Carlton (Hastings) is the guest of Mrs Cecil Wood (Beverley road). Mr and Mrs W. Thomas (North street) are at Peel Forest. _ Mr and Mrs Burke (Papanm) are in Timaru. Mr and Mrs W. 11. Walton and tami y (Park lane) have returned from a holiday at Peel Forest. Miss Copeland, who was with Miss Alice Thomson at Highfield, has returned to Dunedin. Mrs G E Gabites and the Misses Gabites (Wai-iti road) are at their river "ihe Mioses Fowler (Ceylon), who were at the Bungalow, have left on a I S to Mrs H. B S. Johnstone (Otaio). Mr Mr* and Miss Meßeth, Mrs Harrison' (Christchurch), and Mrs and Miss Paterson (Geraldine), are at Cadogan, Sefton street. . . Miss Fay Roberts (\\ aipara) is spending a week-end with Mrs A. E. Kerr (Cave). Miss Helen Paterson (Sefton street), who was also there, has returned to Timaru. The Weather. We'dnesdav was the hottest day experienced in Timaru for a very long time. The temperature at one stage reached 94.4 degrees in the shade, tho hi chest point so far reached. Sundaywas extremely hot, the thermometer then registering 84 degrees, but there was a marked difference between the conditions of the two days. Yesterday the weather was again beautifully fine, but conditions were not nearly so trying on account of the absence of a northwest wind. Oil Tanks Finished. During'the past few weeks good progress has been made by the contractors, Messrs Anderson's, Ltd., of Christchurch, with the erection of the petrol tanks on the waterfront at Timaru, and these have now been completed. A fair amount of subsidiary work yet remains to be done such as the fitting up of an electric pump and motor, and the cleaning up of the grounds, but it is expected that all this will be completed in readiness to receive .the first supply of bulk petrol, which is duo by the Scopas from Singapore, via Auckland and Wellington, about January 29th.
