CAR AND CHEQUES.
FALSE PRETENCES CHARGES. [THE PRESS Special Service.] AUCKLAND, January 20. In the Police Court to-day, John Albert Roberts (23), described by the police as the man who went on a country jaunt in a motor-car and who issued valueless cheques totalling £56 18s, came before Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. In addition to the charges of false pretences, Roberts pleaded guilty to unlawfully converting a motor-car valued at £229, the property of Williams Rental Cars, Ltd., to his own use and theft of accessories valued at £7. Senior-Detective Hammond said Roberts had been in trouble previously. Ho had been on probation for two years and had received two years' imprisonment for false pretences. The Magistrate told accused that the report received about him from the Probation Officer was a bad one. While on probation his conduct had been unsatisfactory. The only thing to do would be to put Roberts away for a while. He would be sentenced to six months' imprisonment on each of two charges, the terms to be cumulative, and would be detained for reformative detention for a period not exceeding, two years.
