SERIOUS DAMAGE.

AUCKLAND,| January 11.
A serious accident was narrowly averted when a new fire-emgine attached to the Onehunga Fire Briigade was travelling to a fire in a sty-roomed houso at the corner of Church Street west and Lower Selwyn street eajrly this morning.
The engine was about to turn into Church street when the driver noticed a man in the middle of fine road. The driver swerved quickly,, and the heavy machine was carried to ithe side of the road, and crashed into a telegraph post. One of the.firemen ws.s thrown from the engine', but fortunately landed on his feet.
The engine was "considerably dam* aged, the running-board and gear being stripped from one side". The shacklebolt was also broken, !but when this happened the engine fyid come to a standstill.
