The closure of banks and the cessation of business has dislocated trade and i« rendering idle tens ot thousands, who are demanding that local authorities pay wages while they are unemployed. Tho correspondent emphasises that British banking, shipping, and commerce preponderate on the Yangtse, Tvbich will enable Great Britain to exercise effective economic pressure on the river port, and other commercial centres, for the purpose of bringing the Cantonese to reason.
