FRENCH SENATE.
A KEEN ELECTION.
SOCIALISTS GAIN.
(BT (AUSTJULIAN APB N.Z, CABts ASSOCHMOV.)
PARIS, January 9,
There is very keen interest in the Senatorial elections to-day. Senators, hold office, for nine years, one-third retiring every three yearß.
This year there are aUo two byelections, therefore 107 Senators will be elected from 32 departments. MM. Cailjaux, Millerand, Barthon, gteeg, Plementel, and De Selves, who is Prer aident of the Senate, are among those Eeeking re-ejection. Deputies who are candidates include AJ. Raoul Peret, former Finance' ister, and M. Marcel Cachin, the Con> munist.
The dominant issue of the election is the straggle of members 6f the Left to increase their representation by a few seats to give them an absolute majority.
SOCIALISTS GAIN
POINCARE'S MAJORITY IN DANGER.

The 63 Senators already elected include MM. Barthou, Peret, Caillaus, and Clenientel. The state of the part ties i§:-^-Conservatives ... ~. 2 Republicans ... ..17 Left Republicans ~. Id Independent Radicals ... 6 Socialist Radicals ... 20 Republican Socialist .., 1 Socialists ... ... 3
M. Milleraud was defeated on a second ballot. The official statistics show that Cartel of the Left gained 9 seats and the Radical Socialists lost 3, but the gained 8, the Republican Socialists 2, and the Communists 2. Out of 108 Senators, 67 were ejected for t|u» first time, and 41 were re-elected. M. De Selves was defeated.
Befqre the election the seats where the aid members were defeated were occupied as follows 2, Republicans 17, Left Republicans 37, Independent Radicals 10, Socialist Radicals and Republican Socialists SO. Socialists 2. These are now, as a result of the election, occupied as follows-.—Conserv-atives 3, Republicans 19, Left Republicans 19, Independent Radicals 0, Socialist Radicals 44, Republican Socialists 2, Socialists 10, Communists' 2.
The moat sensational results recorched were in Paris, where no Socialist has hitherto been elected. The success of tlie opposition was due to the Communists, who voted for Radical Socialists instead of their own candidates. The Socialists' success means a revival of the Cartel between the Radical Socialists and the Socialists, which triumphed in the Chamber elections of 1924. The probable result will be that M, Poinrare's majority will be dangerously reduced. It is expected that M. Caillaux will be asked to succeed M. De Selves in the Presidency of the Senate. He will thus become head of the Court of Justice, which sentenced him a decade ago.
