"iolls of the Maori footballers' warcry caused a rush to Waterloo Station platform, from which the Rt. Hon, J. G. Coates and Mrs Coates leff to ?m----bark on the Aquitania. Mr Coates, in the centre of a semicircle of gesticulating Maoris, was obviously delighted with the homeland touch of farewell, in which LieutenantUlonel H, V. B. de Satge, Mr A. J. Harding, Mr E. J. Harding, Sir Charles Davis, all of the Dominion's Office, Sir Fabian Ware and Sir Herbert Ellissen, both of the Imperial War Graves Commission, participated. Mr Coates, in an interview, stated that he noticed that Great Britain was becoming increasingly permeated with the ideal of Empire trade. Many were quietly pushing the sale of Empire goods and consistently preaching that gospel, He was glad to see a more hopeful spirit and wider outlook. All classes held a quiet confidence in the Empire's future. New Zealand did not intend to rush migration, but would steadily absorb young men and women of the right calibre. She had a lot more orders to place in Great Britain, especially for hydro-electrie gear. Sir James Parr accompanied Mr Coates to Southampton, where, after a civic reception, the town band escorted Mr and Mrs Coates to the Aquitania, on which they have been allotted the. vice-regal suite.
Mr Coates was photographed on the upper deck, dwarfed between his cousins, Mr D. H. G. Coates and Colonel J. Coates. The former is six feet seven inches,
