GERMAN COLONIES.

A REPLY TO MB AMBRY

(BT CABLB—IREBS ASSOCIATION—COJT&IOHT. (AUSTRALIA* AND K.S CABLK ASSOCIATION.

(Hecoived January sth, 10.5 p.m.)

BEBLIN, January 4

Dr. H. Sehnee, a former Governor of German East Africa, replying to Mr Amery, says: "Mr Amery wants Gobden's doctrines applied to Germany and not to Britain. Thirty years of pro* gress in German colonies compared favourably with a similar period in Britain's colonies in Africa and the South Seas. If her colonies had not been taken away Germany would have obtained important supplies, of fats, oils, phosphates, rubber, cocoa, and coffee from thorn. We aro neither thieves nor robbers, wo only desire the return of our own colonies taken away under false pretences." [Questioned as to whether he thought Germany's former colonies ought to be returned, Mr Amery, in an interview in Berlin, said: "Germany at the end of the war renounced her colonies in favour of the Allies. Let US leave it at that. If we begin to discuss <;he question, there is no knowing w%ere we will end. We want to tako the! end of the war as the starting point, and go forward to an understanding among the nations of Europe. Germany does not need colonies to assist in her recovery, and her pre-war trade with those colonies was insignificant. Colonies wore not necessary from the viewpoint of prestige. Austria-Hungary before the war had great prestige and no colonies. Portugal's many colonics havo not given her any prestige."]
