"TREE TORTURE."
AN AMAZING MURDER.
BETRAYED COMRADES' REVENGE (BT CABLE—PRE 86 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND H.J. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, December 31. An amazing story is told in connexion with the discovery of the body of Francis IJalania, a young married man, found hanging head downwards from a tree in a wood near Boauvais. It was at first thought that he had caught his foot in a cleft between the branches while climbing and was unable to release himself. It has been disclosed, however, by a Russian working in the same factory, that a terrorist custom still prevailed, known as the "Torture of the Tree," which was practised against any member of a band who betrayed his comrades. The practice was to wedge the man's leg in the fork of a tree so that he could not possibly release himself, and leave hirft to perish. • The police have come to the conclusion that Halama was a victim of this torture. Six arrests have been effected. '
