Telegrams from Calexico, California, report that violent earthquakes shook the entire Imperial Valley in California, Northern Mexico, and Arizona, shortly after midnight, wbilo residents were celebrating the advent of the New Year. The damage to the biggest buildings is estimated at over 1,000,000 dollars. More than 50 tremors were recorded altogether over a period of five hours.

The populace of Calexico is terrorstricken, and id camping in tho openair, fearing a recurrence. The water mains have broken and tho streets of the town are Hooded. A brewery was burned in Mexicali, across the Mexican border, the loss being estimated at 200,000 dollars. The Governor's palaoe was split open, arid other buildings almost razed.

Tho police are patrolling roped-off zones. The tremors extended from Sail Diego, California, to Puma, in Arizona.

Mexicali, according to other messages, seems to have borne tho brunt of the visitation, fire following the shakes.
