ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 2nd, 5,5 p.m.) LONDON December 31. Air Chief MarshalJ3jr Hugh Trenchard has been promoted, and becomes First Air Marshal. This rank corresponds with Admiral of the Fleet and Field-Marshal. NEW FLYINdJ BOATS. (AUSTRALIAN AJtD S.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received January 2nd, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, December 31. The Air Ministry has ordered two allmetal flying boats, which will be used for flights on the Calcutta-Singapore section of the London to Australia air route. Each will carry fifteen passengers, and is furnished with three engines, and will have a non-stop range of 500 miles. It is understood that the Air Ministry has arranged a cruise for the middlo of the year of a fleet Of flying boats. They will go to Australia via Singapore, and will be commanded by an officer of high rank. The machines will be of the supermarine Southampton type, carrying a crew of, four, and equipped wi';h Napier Lion twin engines of 900 horse-power each. The Air Ministry recently equippod coastal reconnaissance squadrons with this 1 type' If one engine fails the second will maintain the planes aloft at a speed of 110 miles an hour/

Sir Samuel Hoare's aeroplane crossed the Mediterranean at a height of 50ft. Euimot, the cinematographer, missed the liner at Malta, and his absence was not perceived until the aeroplane j started.
