NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARS

A statement issued by the Rhodes Trustees gives particulars concerning the Rhodes scholarships for the academic year 1925-26. During tho year 63 Rhodes scholars took up their scholarships for the first time. The number of scholars actually in residence for either the whole or some part of the academic year 1925-2G was 188 —viz., 97 from the British Empire, and 91 from the United States of America. These scholars were distributed among the various subjects as follows: — Litcrac Humauiores (including Philosophy or kindred subjects pursued with a view to advance degrees), 11; Mathematics, 3; Natural Science and Medicine, 42; Law, 54; Modern History, 20; School of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, 16; Theology, 5; Modern Languages, 5; English Literature, 19; Economics (Diploma, B.Litt., of DPhil.), 4; Education, 3; Forestry or Agriculture, 2; Miscellaneous, 4. There were also in residence for one or more terms 19 cx-scholars. During the vcar 02 scholars either completed the term of the scholarship or went finally out of residence without completing it. The academic year 19261927 starts with IS3 Rhodes scholars in residence. At least three more will be coming into residence in January. In addition there will be ten cx-scholars in residence. Tho examination list includes the name of the New Zealand scholar, Mr S. P. McCallum, who gains tho degree of D.Phil, in Natural Science, and gains the distinction of being elected to an official Fellowship in Physics at New Coillcgo, Oxford. Mr A. E. Porntt receives the B.A. degree. Mr Porritt also represented Oxford against Cambridge in athletic sports. In all, 92 scholars proceeded to degrees for Which they had qualified. In various branches of athletics 32 scholars represented Oxford against Cambridge. Dunn" the year notice was received of new books published by 32 Rhodes Scholars. Lectureships and Fellowships. During the year' 1927 appointments will be made to the 1928 scholarships. Scholars so elected will come into residence in October, 1928. The Rhodes Trustees have announced the foundation of the Rhodes Memorial Lectureship and of tho Rhodes Travelling Fellowships. The Rhodes Memorial Lectureship is to be awarded to any man or woman who has attained to a position of real eminence in science, the arts, business, or the public life of his or her community, on conditions o. residing in Oxford for one term, and being available for consultation and discussion, and of delivering a number of lectures. Sir Robert Borden, Prime Minister of Canada, from 1911 to 1920, has accepted tho invitation to be the first Rhodes Lecturer. The Rhodes Travelling Scholarships will bo awarded to resident Fellows and Tutors at Oxford to enable them to travel, study, or undertake research in the British Commonwealth and the United States, and especially ih those territories from which Rhodes Scholars are derived. The first awards will be made early in 1927. The foundations of Rhodes House in Oxford have been laid, and it is expected that Ihe building will be completed some time in 1925.
