TJio pleasures of living in Neiv York's Tombs Prison, where one might 'rule liko the Prince of Wales'' provided his bankroll was bis enough, was disclosed to a Grand Jury in New York investigating an attempted break in which three gangsters were killed. llyinan Amberg, wealthy criminal who engineered the foiled escape, wai permitted to .see women night and day in his cell and often was escorted to a private room when the eyes of his mates became too prying, witnesses declared. AM tho prisoners on Ins tier lived in luxury at his expense, according to A. J. Fricndinnn, an inmate, who said he knew three days before that Ambers and his companions, Robert Berg and "Red" McKettna, would attempt to break out. Two were killed in the Tombs courtyard after a gun-fight with tho police. One committed suicide after, he had murdered tho warden and found escape impossible. Tho Grand Jury was wondering how tho prisoners obtained their weapons.
