SIR ERNEST RUTHERFORD.
EXPECTED IN NOVEMBER. * «——— Sir Ernest Butherford, an old boy of Nelson College, and a graduate of Canterbury College, who is pow one of the world's leading scientists, is about to vigifc New Zealand, and is expected in Christchurch early in November. A professorial deputation from Canterbury College, consisting of Dr. H. G. Denham, Professor of Chemistry, and Dr. C. Coleridge Farr. Professor of Physics, waited on the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) yesterday and asked that a civic welcome might be accorded Sir Ernest Rutherford when he reached Christchurch on or ' about November 3rd.
The Mayor replied that ho would cause arrangements to bo xnade for a suitable reception, to the distinguished scientist.
Sir Ernest Rutherford was horn in Nelson in 1871 and was educated at Nelson College, Canterbury College, and Cambridge University. Ho obtained his M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics and physics in 1893, and his B.Sc. degree and the 1851 Exhibition Science Scholarship in 1894. He then proceeded to Cambridge and entered Trinity College and carried out research wprk at Cavendish Laboratory. He has been awarded a nuinber of pedals for scientific, research, including the Nobel Prize for chemistry. In 1923 he was elected president of the British Association for the advancement of He has held important University appointments in England and Canada, and is the author of numerous publications on scientific subjects.
