NOTES FOR THE WEEK. Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at 5.33 a.m. t and in the river at 7.4 a.m., and to-morrow at 6.37 » ™ and 8.6 a.m. respectively. The Church as. At the Beach Chnich to-morrow, Holy Communion will bo celebrated at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The vicar will preach at both services. At evensong tho Ker. E. E. Maiden, vicar of St. Chad's, will preach. The evening service at North New Brighton will be conducted by the Bev. W. F. Knowles. The sermons at the Methodist Church will be conducted by the Rev. F. T. Bead, at 11 a.m., and by the Bcv. S. Lawry at 6.30 p.m. At tho South Brighton Hall, at 2.45 p.m., the Bev. P. T. Bead will preach. Life-Saving School Award. The headmaster of tho Main School, Mr G. "\V. Bishop, has received a letter from the KoyaJ Life-Saving Society congratulating the school upon again winning the Collins Cup with a higher total nine points than last year. Twelve awards from the Societv were gained by C. F. Barnett, S.'W.'a. Davidson, M. H. Israelson, P. L. Kemp, A. F. Lee, J. H. Mawson, B. M. .Dougall, J. D. Miljer, H. Nelson, L. E. Bussell, N. Teichert., and E. H. Ward. The instructor was Mr F. J. L. Scott. Murray F. Israelson gained a bronze medallion Mr Frank J. L. Scott an hon. instructor's certificate, and Cecil F. Barnett a teacher's certificate. The last-named was also elected a life member of the Society, an honour that seldom falls to tho lot of so young a. swimjner.
Concert. In aid of the furnishing fund of the new Anglican Church, a very enjoyable entertainment, was given in Joyland Theatre on Wednesday by the Avohsido Choir, under the baton of Mr Arthur Lilley, A.8.C.0. The programme included glpps, part-songs, vocal and instrumental duets, anthems, and the "Anvil Chorus,' 1 from "II Trovatorc." Amongst those who contributed items were Misses Carrie Hoarp. Peggy McCreanor, M. Christian, E. Dimucombe, and Messrs A. Ward, Davis, Kinvig, Greg Russell, Marcus Ward, and H. V. Ward- The vicar, the Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty, who presided, thanked the performers n|oat heartily for the programme rendered. Croquet Club. The fortnightly euchre tourney of the local Croquet Club was held on Wednesday at the "Oasis," the prize-winners being; Ladies, Mrs Cook 1, Mrs Nicholla 2; gentiemen, Mr Smith 1, Mr Ban--Bom 2; consolation prizes, Mrs Smith and Mr Broadbelt, jun. FootbalL The annual football match, New Brighton Senior Cadets v. Lyttelton Cadets, will be played at Hagley Park this afternoon. • Gala. At a meeting of representative of the" several local sports bodies, the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, presiiUng, it wap decided to hold a gila on iabour Day. Mr Sugden was appointed secretary, and Mr J. H. Shaw treasurer. Whist Club. The "Happy Hours*' Whist Claj» dance was a very enjoyable function. The prize-winners were Mrs Gilkes and Mrs Cooke; consolation prizes going "to Mrs O'Donnell and Mr D. SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. Progress League. In the absence of the president, Mr H. A. Glasson,' the monthly meeting of the South Brighton" Progress League was presided over by Mr H. there being a fair attendance. A! letter was received from the Borough Council intimating formation work on Estuary road and Richmond terrace was receiving every attention. The Finance Committee of the South Brighton Gala*, in its report, showed that amounts.had been expanded as follows: On giant stride, rouhd-abont, sep-saWs, and parallel bars, £122 18s; skylight in dressing room and providing seats and rubbish baskets, £.13 8s; allocated for formation of clay fbotpaths through Domain, £2O. Tho residents were congratulated upon the result of their labours in having converted Pleasant point Domain'into a -playground for children, and an ideal picknicking resort.
