OVERBOARD IN GALE.
DESPERATE FIGHT FOB LIFE. (naS3 ASSOCUTIOV tslxgbix.) WELLINGTON, September 4. When the schooner Elsie Mary was off Tokomaru Bay at 2.30 a.m. on Thursday last, running in the teeth of a southerly gale, orders wcro given to hoist the gaff. The- mate, Herman Erorim, sprang to the top of tbo deck cabin and was endeavouring to mako fast the peak line when the vessel gave a roll. The gaff swung round and knocked the mate into thn sea. Erorim, who was hidden from the rest of the crew in the inky darkness, had the presence of mind to grasp tho pealc line as ho fell, but tho first indication Captain Stephens had that anything was amiss was a splaah in the sea over the stern. .Erorim rose struggling in tho icy water. As he was in his oilskins and heavy sea boots, it was with difficulty that he kept afloat, even with the aid of the rope. Tt was over five minutes before he could be pulled aboard, much exhausted. Erorim soon recovered, however, and was on duty next day.
