WIMBLEDON TOURNAMENT. MLLE. LENGLEN'S WIN IN SINGLES. (BI CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, July 3. In the final of the ladies' championship singles at the Wimbledon tournament,. Mile. Lenglen defeated Miss Joan Fry. Showery weather delayed the game for 23 minutes. Miss Fry scored only 22 points, and it was rsmarkable that her hitherto wonderful forehand was made to appear weak, though her reputedly weßk backhand was very sound. Mile. T-englen remained almost motionless, but kept her opponent running to and fro along the baseline with superb placings. Miss Fry's wonderful mobility was a feature of the game. She kept up the rallies, but Mile. Lenglen eventually made her overhit, and had her at her mercy in the second set. The two sets only occupied 15 and 12 minutes respectively. LACOSTE BEATS BOROTRA. BRITISH PAIR LOSE IN DOUBLES. (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received July sth, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 4. At Wimbledon, in the semi-final of the men's doubles, Borotra. /and Lacoste beat Morpurgo and Kehrling, 11-9, 7-9, 6-1, 6-1. It was a fierce battle of volleying, with all four at the net. Borotra once hit the ball clean through, the net, the referee awarding him the point. The position was not realised till the end of the game, when a, new net was erected'. Borotra and Kehrling stood out. The former sometimes smashed from the baseline. , The pace slowed: after the first two gruelling Bets, the Continen-. tals deteriorating. Lacoste served brilliantly throughout. In the 6cmi-final of the women's doubles, Mile. Lenglen and Miss Ryan beat Mrs Beamish and Miss Clarke, 6-0, 6-2. In the mixed doubles semi-final, Morpurgo and Miss Ryan beat Wheatley and Miss Lambert Chambers, 9-7, 6-4. In tho semi-final of the men's doubles, Hennessey and Casey beat Brugnon end Cocliet, 7-5, 5-7, 9-7, 6-4. In the final of the singles Laco3to beat Borotra, G-3, 6-3, 4-6, 8-6. The weather was overcast, and the attendance, which was large, included the King. In the mixed doubles the Britishers were v.-ithin a point of the 'set when they were G-5. Wheatley was splendid all round except for a. tendency to double-fault. Miss Ryan's net work was excellent, but Miss Chambers was better on the baseline. The eecond set produced brilliant, tennis, of which Morpurgo's groundwork and Wheatley's smashing were features. The struggle between Americans and the French in the men's doubles was a ding donj contest. The first four games went against the service, after which Casay t got into his stride with his hurricane serwng, and won the games on his service to 5-5. The second set was almost- a repetition of the first. In the third there was some brilliant net plav, and racquet to racquet volleying. Tho fourth was won from 4 all. Hennessey excelled in forehand strokes and _ Casey in serving. The French were superior in the overhead play. The mixed doubles game was tame. It appears that Bototra's through the net shot, if observed, would have given the
Continentals the fet. They were forty love and leading 5-4 in the first set.
In the All Rngland plate final, the Hungarian Kelirling beat tho Englishman I<. George, 6-3, 6-4. The remaining finals trill bo slaved on Monday, obviating Borotra's contesting three finals in one day.
Borotra lost the singles title to a better tactician. 'With the exception of infrequent excursions, Lacoste's more accurate baseline play Icept the holder from the net. Borotra was errniic in the oneninp, mistiming his strokes, whereas Lacoste was very steady, particularly cn the backhand. Borotra was many times foot-faulted. The first and second sets were marked by brilliant rallies, which h:>.d their climax in superb p"B°ing shots. Borolra, when servins agfiin. made a hole in the net, though the ball did not pass through. The net was changed at the end of the set. Tim clnnipio'i recovered la3t year's dash in the third set. though he ws<s kept running to the baseline. In the fourth. I.jcoste continued to exp'oit th? baseline r>lav with almost mathematical accuracy. Ho !rd 4-1. Then the champion levelled at 4-4. Lacoste won the service and then won on his own fo'* tb» final of the march. In the final if th* ladies' 'doubles MdUe. Lenfflon Miss Bynn be?t Mrs Bridge and Mrs Mcllquliam, 6-2, C-'2.
