——♦ THE FUNERAL. Host impressive of the many tributes of respect to the memory of the late Mr A. E. Whyte, secretary of the Wellington Racing Club, was that in which members of various sections of the community joined on Saturday morning at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral) Wellington. The news of Mr Whyte's death, which occurred suddenly on Thursday evening, cast a gloom over the very wide circle in which the late energetic and capable official of the Wellington llacing Club had been a. prominent figure. This circle extended beyond sporting activities, Mr Whyte's services in various other directions having won for him much admiration as a citizen eager to advance the cause of all classes. The high esteem and respect in which he was held was shown by the large gathering at St. Paul's on Saturday. The service at the Pro-Gnthedral, conducted by Archdeacon Johnson, was attended b.v about three hundred, people, including many personal friends, and representatives of the Government and of numerous bodies and organisations. The interment tooly place at Karori, this being private. There were many floral tributes. The chief mourner were tlirea sons of Vie late Mr Whvte (Messrs tyjliglas, Robert, and Patrick Whyte). Colonel Wliyte (a cousin), of Palmerston North), Mr Foster (a brother-in-law), of Wellington, and Mr E. S. Luttrell (one of the late Mr Whyte's most intimate friends), of Christchurch. Those present at the service in the church included the Prime Minister Ctlie Hon. J. G. Coates), Sir Francis Bell (Leader of the Legislative Connoil). the Hon. A. D. McLeod (Minister of Lands), and Mr F. D. Thomson (private secretary to the Prime Minister). Officials. ex-officin,'s, and members of the Wellington Rayng Club were largely represented, among the Tormcr being Mr .T. B. Sarcourt (president), Messrs J. W. Abbott. J. G. Duncan, Tv. D. Duncan, D. M. Finlay. E. Riddiford, and N. McLean, and Drs. H. A. H. Gilmer and H. J. McLean (stewards), Captaiii Gage Williams (judge), and Messrs J. Griffiths (acting-secretary), H. Coyle (liandicapper), 17. Shannon (clerk of sca'cs and timekeeper), and Isorman Hailev (superintendent of Trentham racecourse). Others present- were the Mnvor of Wellington (Mr C. B. Norwood). Sir John Luke. 31.P., the Hon. T. W. Hislcp, and Messrs A. I). Duncan, W. H.. Ballinger, H. W. Moss, P. S. K. Ma nassey, P. J. Kelleher. J. G. W. Brrdie, W. J. Blundell, H. P. F. Blundel!, E. A. Blundell, G. F. Pearce, H. L. Nathan, F. S. Hodson. W. E. Reid, John Campbell. S. A. Longuet, C. W. Tringham. H. F. Johnston. J .C. Peacock, M. Denniston, J. Representatives of various sportinsr bodies were numerous. Messrs R. W. Shallcrass (Sports' 'Protection League), C. G. Wilson (Wellington Cricket Association). and R. W. Short (Wellington Trotting Club) being among those present.
