TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The .Technical College Bcnrd or -Governors met last night, ■Mr McGregor Wright presiding.

The Buildings Committee'reported that the Director of Education had authorised a grant made up as follows:—£4o 10s, half cost of boundary fence; £IBO, two-thirds, co.st of playground .improvements; £B, two-thirds estimated cost of rubbish, destructor. The Agricultural -Committee reported that the- Canterbury Hockey Association had written, asking if ordinary matches, not including Technical College teams, might be arranged en Saturdays at Ensor's road, but the committee could not recommend that this be allowed.

The Finance Committee reported that it had received the treasurer's financial statement for (he period May 21st to June 18th, showing receipts amounting to £2226 3s, an expenditure of £2066 lis lid, and total credit balance of £1451 15s ?d; that the Director of Education had notified that the Beard must assume full financial responsibility for the working of the Boys' Hostel, and in accordance with this, satisfactory arrangements hod been made with the Director of the College; that the Education Department had notified that the Director's house allowance, usually paid-by the Department, would be discontinued whilst he is in residence at the Boys' Hostel; anil that a grant of twenty guineas be_nude to the Dunedin Exhibition Committee for the Education Court, subject to jierir.ission being obtained from the AiiditoiGeneral for.this to be paid out of the ordinary funds oi the College. The reports were adopted. The Apppintmenls Committee lepcrtcd that the Director of Education had written stating that intending students in the colnmercial, home science, or agricultural courses, respectively, rjsidh'g nearer to Hangiora than to Christchurch, would be issued in future with free tickets only to the former place, but this restriction did not »pply to students already enrolled in the Technical High School. After a short discussion, i', wi.s decided to refer the question back to the Department, with a protest, ard that Kaiapoi should be specially mentioned in the matter. Dr. D. E. Hansen, Director of the College, in his report, said: —I should be glad if consideration could be given to the formation of more advisory committers in connexion with different courses, in the evening school particularly. The College has l.cnefited distinctly from the services of the cabinetmaking and typography advisory committees respectively, and I believe that trade representatives on these committees have learned something of the activities and possibilities in our evening school. An endorsement of the value of our work by those engaged in the callings for which the College provides preliminary or supplementary training is always well worth having. The following remits, recommended by the Finance Committee to be brought before the annual conference to be held in Wellington next month, were approved:—That the Education Department be asked to wake allowances towards the cost of instruction and bath charges for instruction in swimming and life-saving in Technical Hish and Dav Technical Schools; that the Minister of Labour be asked to extend the provisions of the Apprentices' Act so that they may be applicable to females as well as to males: that the conference consider ' the best methods of maintaining close touch between the Technical Schools on the one hand and industries and commerce on the other, the following means being suggested: establishment of advisory committees, utilising the services of honorary outside examiners, seeking representation on apprenticeship committees. The chairman, Director, and Mr h. H. Andrews were appointed to attend the conference.
